IN-SCHOOL OPERA FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

An intensive introduction to the operatic art form, as well as cross-curricular connections to literature, social science and language skills.

This 10-week program uses opera to promote student self-esteem and teamwork. This year, we premiere a new opera by Lee Holdridge and Richard Sparks, Tanis in America, inspired by the Romeo and Juliet story. Rashid, son of a single, African-American nurse, lives in Los Angeles and attends public school. Tanis, daughter of an ambassador from Zambia, lives in Beverly Hills and goes to private school. They meet by chance at a school trip to The Museum of Tolerance and fall in love. Being from two completely different worlds, heartbreak and tragedy seem inevitable. Yet, in contrast to Romeo and Juliet, these young people fight against the stereotypical roles and outcomes one might expect.

DATES: Mid-February to mid-May 2009 (All workshops are scheduled between 9:00am and 3:00pm). This program is ideal for single track (traditional) schools and may not work for all multi-track schools. Contact us for more information.

REQUIREMENTS: Enrollment is open to 10 schools within a 30-mile radius of the Music Center (maximum of 50 students per school). Teacher attendance is required at a preparatory in-service seminar on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 3:30pm.

FEE: The school participation fee for the Secondary In-School Opera program is $999.

DEADLINE: Applications for the Secondary In-School Opera are accepted throughout the year. We will notify you if we can accommodate your school.

CLASSROOM ENRICHMENT

VOICES FOR TOLERANCE - A PROJECT FOR JUSTICE AND HARMONY
LA Opera continues to teach tolerance through its Education and Community Programs. Voices for Tolerance is a three-year program that encompasses a number of main stage, school, and community-based performances and events, featuring themes of building understanding, social justice and cooperative action.

As part of the initiative, LA Opera offers multi-week, choral program residencies at selected school sites that celebrate the themes of tolerance and community. The specific goals of this program are to expand awareness of diversity, foster acceptance and understanding of differences, encourage collaboration and community, and increase the love of vocal music and the arts. Classroom teachers and site staff work in direct partnership with LA Opera teaching artists to reach this aim.

REQUIREMENTS: Partner teachers and site staff must attend a mandatory planning meeting. Teachers are required to send weekly reports following teaching artist visits. Interested teachers should contact us for more information.
