IN-SCHOOL OPERA FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

An intensive introduction to the operatic art form, as well as cross-curricular connections to literature, social science and language skills.

This ten-week program uses opera to promote student self-esteem and teamwork. Your students learn singing and staging, and perform for your school with LA Opera singers in Tanis in America, a new opera by Lee Holdridge and Richard Sparks, inspired by the Romeo and Juliet story. Jake, an African American teen being raised by his mother, a nurse, lives in Los Angeles and attends public school. Tanis, the daughter of an ambassador from Zambia, lives in Beverly Hills and goes to private school. They meet by chance at a school trip to The Museum of Tolerance and fall in love. Being from two completely different worlds, heartbreak and tragedy seem inevitable. Yet, in contrast to Romeo and Juliet, these young people fight against the stereotypical roles and outcomes one might expect.

DATES: February 22 - May 7, 2010. All workshops are scheduled for one class period, one day each week between 9:00am and 3:00pm. One performance will be scheduled between May 17 and 28, 2010. This program is ideal for single track (traditional) schools. This program may not work for all multi-track schools. Contact us for more information.

REQUIREMENTS: Enrollment is open to 10 schools within a 30-mile radius of the Music Center (maximum of 50 students per school). Adequate performance space is necessary. Teacher attendance is required at a preparatory in-service seminar on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 4:00pm.

FEE: The school participation fee for the Secondary In-School Opera program is $999.

DEADLINE: Applications for the Secondary In-School Opera are accepted throughout the year. Please contact us for more information.
