Josiah Yiu, who made his LA Opera solo debut at age ten as the Shepherd Boy in Tosca in 2005, returns as the First Boy in The Magic Flute (January 2009). Born in Canada, he moved to Los Angeles at age four and has been singing with the LA Children's Chorus (LACC) for the past seven years. This is Josiah's second appearance as the First Boy in The Magic Flute, as he also sang the role at the Hollywood Bowl in 2007 under the baton of Leonard Slatkin. In the same year, he sang the role of Baby Moth in LACC's world premiere production Keepers of the Night under Grant Gershon. As a chorister, he sang in LA Opera productions of Der Rosenkavalier (2005) and Hansel and Gretel (2006). Josiah's first solo appearance was with the LA Philharmonic in Dutilleux's The Shadows of Time (2005) at Disney Concert Hall under the baton of Esa Pekka Salonen. Since then, he has performed as a LACC chorister in Carmina Burana (2005), El Nino (2005), and Mahler's Symphony No. 3 (2006) with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. This year, Josiah has been selected as a member of the ACDA National Junior High Honor Choir and will perform in Oklahoma City under Judy Bowers. He will also perform with the Mirman Concert Choir at Carnegie Hall in the National Choir Festival in April 2009. Besides singing, Josiah loves to fence. He is a competitive sabre fencer and is currently ranked nationally in the top eight in the Youth 14 Men's Sabre category. |
