British tenor John Treleaven, a native of Cornwall, made his LA Opera debut in 2008 as Tristan, and returns in the role of Siegfried during the 2009/10 season.
"John Treleaven has reached a level of role identification which amazes, captivates, excites and inspires" wrote the press after his spectacular debut as Tristan in Amsterdam with Simon Rattle, a role which he has performed worldwide, in productions of Tristan und Isolde with the Hamburg State Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Frankfurt Opera, Brisbane Festival, Teatro Verdi in Verona, Teatro Regio in Torino, Santiago de Chile, in concert performances in Montreal, at the Luzern Festival with Claudio Abbado, as well as with the BBC Symphony Orchestra with Donald Runnicles. He also performed Tristan at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in 2006 and 2007, as well as in the summer of 2008 at the Munich Festival. During the 2007/08 season, he performed Tristan at the Vienna State Opera and the LA Opera.
John Treleaven is among the most sought after Heldentenors at the important international opera houses. He performed Walther von Stolzing in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Bavarian State Opera Festival in Munich, in Toulouse and in Peter Konwitschny's production at the Hamburg State Opera. He has performed the title role in Lohengrin at the Vienna State Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Hamburg State Opera, and in Gothenburg, Basle and Amsterdam and recently he made his successful debut in the title role of Parsifal at the 2008 Richard Wagner Festival in Wels, Austria.
John Treleaven has achieved particular success internationally as Siegfried in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, including Tokyo, Zurich, Helsinki, Barcelona (available on DVD), at the Vienna State Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago with Sir Andrew Davis and recently at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London with Antonio Pappano and Keith Warner, where he performed Siegfried in the Ring cycle in 2007.
He has performed Siegmund in Die Walküre in Karlsruhe, Tokyo and Nice, in Dresden's Semper Opera, as well as in concerts with the Bamberg Symphony and the Helsinki Radio Orchestra.
John Treleaven studied in London at the College of Music with William Lloyd Webber, amongst others, and at the London Opera Centre, Covent Garden as well as in Naples under Maestro Campanino. At first he sang primarily in his home country at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Welsh National Opera, the Scottish National Opera and the English National Opera, where he appeared in numerous roles such as the Prince in Rusalka, which is available on DVD. At the Edinburgh Festival he sang the role of Hans in The Bartered Bride, as well as Radames in Aida, Erik in Der fliegende Holländer, Florestan in Fidelio and in Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex.
In 1991, he made his highly acclaimed German debut at the Mannheim National Theatre in the title role of Peter Grimes, a role he has since sung at the Hamburg State Opera, in Bremen, Frankfurt and Genoa, at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires and at the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg. The tenor's repertoire also includes such roles as Apollo in Daphne, Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos, Canio in Pagliacci, Calaf in Turandot, Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del West and Hermann in The Queen of Spades. At the Berlin State Opera he sang Pollione in Norma, Menelas in Die Ägyptische Helena at the Teatro Real in Madrid and the Emperor in Die Frau ohne Schatten in Helsinki. Further sensational debuts include Idomeneo at the New National Theatre Tokyo and Pedro in Tiefland at the Frankfurt Opera and at the Zurich Opera House.
His discography includes the solo recitals "Wagner's Heroes" featuring excerpts from the Ring, and a "Wagner Portrait" (Oehmsclassics).
