Spanish designer Llorenç Corbella makes his LA Opera debut with scenery for The Barber of Seville (2009).
He was born in Vallfogona de Riucorb (Catalonia, Spain). His professional career has always has been tied to the world of the visual arts. He studied interior design at the Escola Elisava and the School of Applied Arts and Crafts in Barcelona from 1976 to 1979. He also studied art history at the University of Barcelona from 1978 to 1980, then stage design at the Theater Institute in Barcelona from 1981 to 1983.
From 1981 to 1986, he was an apprentice at the Teatre Lliure in Barcelona, working in several different disciplines. He was an assistant scenery and costume designer for several shows by M. Amenós, I. Prunes and Fabià Puigserver. His designs for Sansón y Dalila, Mar i cel, Yo me bajo en la próxima y...Stage were seen at Milan's Piccolo Teatro through the assistance of the Ministry of Culture in 1986.
He collaborated on the artistic direction of films such as Daniya and Sauna and also for advertising and exhibitions. He has worked with directors including Calixto Bieito, Joan Ollé, Josep Muntanyés, Emilio Sagi, Xavier Albertí and Mario Gas and has participated in productions at the Centro Dramàtico Nacional, the Teatro Clásico and the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and the opera companies of Monte Carlo, Tokyo, Lisbon and Bilbao.
He has been recognized for excellence in theatrical design with the Barcelona Critics' Prize (1999) for scenery for Measure for Measure, directed by Calixte Bieito, and with the Max Scenery Award (1998) for Guys and Dolls, directed by Mario Gas, both produced by the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya. His work in dance has included several productions for the Mudances - Àngels Margarit Company.
In ten years of teaching at the Barcelona Theater Institute (1987-1997), he worked with students on all of the elements of stage production: scenery, costumes, lighting, makeup, construction, etc.
He was artistic director of the Fira del Teatre in Carrer de Tàrrega from 1984 to 1985 and later from 2003 to 2006. This unique experience showcased many different performances from companies and festivals around the world.
